  5. Dec 11,  · Type II cassette tapes use a chrome based magnetic compound in the tape (CrO2), whereas Type I uses Iron (FeO2). Type I is cheaper but Type II has better sound. Neither is as good as CD, but the Type II sounds much better. Your cassette deck should detect a CrO2 tape, if not, there is a setting for CrO2 that you should use.
